As it turns out, apparently shutting down your pc does not actually turn it off, but rather puts it into sleep, or hibernate more likely. This most recent night before going to sleep, I shut down, switched off the PSU, took out the power cable, then pressed and held the power button 4 times, as one would to drain the CMOS.

Water hitting any of your components isn't really too much of an issue while the rig is turned off. The minute you send electricity through it is where the issue arises. Any water that got inside the PSU itself would be more difficult to dry out. When you turned the rig on, it was likely still wet/damp inside.
